The areas of impacts were recreational beaches. In the summer months these would have been
an issue. However, since the clean up was conducted during the cooler early Spring, no
beach closures were necessary. There were also no closures to commercial or recreational
fisheries. Thirteen birds died and over 100 were oiled. At West meadow beach several
Piping Plovers (endangered species) were observed oiled and monitored. Effects to
tourism, recreation areas, or personal property. There was a high degree of media and
congressional attention to this spill. Numerous press conferences and briefings were held.
